Educators know that knowledge-building is a lifelong process. We encourage our students to be inquisitive, to find ways to connect to new ideas, and explore theories, cultures, and concepts that are unfamiliar. But how often do we as educators take the time to seek these experiences for ourselves?

Cayuga Community College created the Teachers Professional Development Institute to provide affordable and motivating educational experiences for K-12 teachers throughout Central New York. The Institute's workshops, seminars, and discussions challenge teachers to consider emerging methodologies and find solutions to the issues we face in our classrooms every day, while meeting the state requirement for 35 hours of annual professional development coursework.

We know that teacher quality is the single most powerful influence on student achievement. The Teachers Professional Development Institute enables CNY educators to take time for themselves to learn, re-engage with the profession, and share ideas with peers and national education consultants — all of which improves the quality of the education we deliver to students. The Institute provides the forum to help teachers meet both their professional and personal goals. We invite you to brush up your skills, learn new ones, or simply find inspiration at the Teachers Professional Development Institute.

Cayuga Community College was awarded the contract in support of the Central/Southern Tier Regional Adult Education Network. This award falls under the Workforce Investment Act Title II from the New York State Office of Adult Career and Continuing Education Services. The contract spans five years beginning July 2009 and concluding June 2014.

The Central/Southern Tier is one of seven RAENs providing technical assistance and professional development to adult literacy, occupational, and continuing education programs funded by the NYS Education Department. The goal of the RAEN is to improve the quality of state-funded adult and family literacy programs and to assist programs in meeting or exceeding statewide benchmarks of the National Reporting System. The Central/Southern Tier RAEN is charged with the planning and implementation of high quality, research-based professional development delivered throughout the sixteen counties of Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Otsego, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins.

The RAEN serves as the primary liaison between the 28 local programs and the New York State Education Department while monitoring these programs as they progress toward state and national education targets. As the Lead Educational Agency, Cayuga Community College will also lead a joint initiative with the NYS Education Department in the exploration of post secondary transitional services to support adult literacy students as they transition into college.
