• DJGPP is a version of the GNU C/C++ compiler for DOS (Windows too). Use the ZIP Picker to figure out what components to download. You want RHIDE , which is an Integrated Development Environment (edit, compile, and run your program all while in RHIDE).
• About's C Programming Tutorial.
• A good web site for C is Steve Summit's: http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/cclass/cclass.html . I especially like the section about the skills needed to be a programmer ( http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/cclass/progintro/sx1.html ). He makes the case that you need four skills to be a good programmer: (1) attention to detail, (2) stupidity, (3) good memory, and (4) an ability to think abstractly on several levels. I agree with him 100%.
• Another web site that can help the beginning C programmer is http://www.cs.princeton.edu/courses/archive/spr03/cs126/faq2.html . There's lots of stuff specific to Princeton's computer systems and classes, but the sections on Common C Programming Bugs and some of the Assignments Section are good for beginning programmers.
• Ted Jenson has a very good tutorial on pointers and arrays.
• A good book for the serious programmer is The Practice of Programming by Brian Kernighan and Rob Pike. About 250 pages, and I payed $30. A little expensive, but very good discussions about how to program. The authors have created a web site devoted to the book.
