Apple is the most competitive alternative in the operating system market. Apple opened its doors as a corporation in 1977. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded the company. Political struggle, coupled by certain marketing and technological failures in the company led to apples near demise in the early 1990's. This is the time period in which Steve Jobs was fired from apple, and went on to found NeXT computers. Apple fell into such a slump, that in 1997 it made a last ditch effort to boost the company by spending 400 million dollars to aquire NeXT computers and along with it Steve Jobs. His return as CEO of the company has helped Apple return to the forefront of operating system as well as expand its reaches outside the operating system and personal computer market.

Apple has had a great many operating systems in its 30 years plus of industry. Apple started in 1978 with Apple Dos 3.1, a text based disc operating system. And is currently on OS X 10.5 Leopard. There has been a number of versions inbetween, all bringing something new to the apple experience. Those versions of the operating system are:
