Cayuga Community College appointed Julie White of Rochester to the faculty position of director of the Centers for Student Engagement and Academic Advisement.
In this role, she oversees the comprehensive array of activities and services that enable students to meet their educational objectives, including career, transfer and job-readiness, residential and first-year programs, new student orientation, student leadership and engagement, student advocacy, course registration, academic advisement, and judicial affairs.
White most recently served as assistant director of the Student Services Center at the Damon City Campus of Monroe Community College in Rochester. In that role, she was responsible for leading counseling, academic advising, and communications and serving more than 11,000 students in the past year.
Before working at Monroe, she served as director of human subjects research at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), associate director of RIT’s Center for Student Transition and Support, coordinator of the RIT Women’s Center, and a health educator at SUNY Geneseo and University of Rochester.
She said in order to be successful in her new role at Cayuga she must continue to blend her administrative and management responsibilities with direct interaction with students, as she has done throughout her career.
“I believe it is my role and, indeed, obligation, to work directly with the students, in order to keep my hands in the operational aspects of the Centers and to facilitate student persistence and completion,” White said. “My experience in student affairs has provided me a breadth of experience and a ‘big picture’ view of the role of student affairs in supporting students and faculty in creating an optimal learning environment.”
She earned a bachelor’s in English literature from Miami University in Ohio, a master’s in counseling, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of Rochester. Her dissertation focused on a case study of community college students’ experiences with financial aid policies and practices. She has been recognized for her innovative practices, having received Monroe Community College’s Innovation of the Year Award twice. Among her other awards and honors are being named a fellow of the American College Health Association, receiving the Award of Excellence from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and Outstanding Citizenship award from the RIT Staff Council.
