Harlequin Productions’ spring comedy garners three TANYS awards, continues run March 21-23

DATE: 03-18-2013

An adjudicator from the Theater Association of New York State (TANYS) recognized Cayuga Community College Harlequin Productions’ spring play with awards for ensemble acting, costume design, and direction. The production of Love in the Insecurity Zone by Mike Folie takes a comic look at a future America. The show runs Thursday through Saturday, March 21-23 at 8 p.m. in the College’s Irene A. Bisgrove Community Theatre, 197 Franklin St. Auburn. General admission is $5, and students with I.D. get the special price of $1.

The adjudicator reviewed the March 16 performance of the play based on 10 criteria, believability of acting and effective timing, character interpretation, and overall impact. The adjudicator awarded the following recognitions:

  • Meritorious Achievement in Ensemble Acting to the Cast
  • Meritorious Achievement in Costume Design and Execution to Matthew Ryan Limerick of Auburn
  • Excellence in Direction to Bob Frame of Skaneateles

“The Harlequin Players converted the Bisgrove Theatre into a futuristic world where happiness is the key ingredient to success and power,” the adjudicator said in his review. “This quick-paced comedy has everything, including a high-tech set that conveys the environment and mood of the piece and moves the production from scene to scene.”

The play takes place in a future United States characterized by Security Zones, personal bar code tattoos, and armed commuters. A main character, Gayle, finds life either boring or terrifying. Her mood is improved by a sudden romance with Hank, a secretive government agent on a mission to find very happy women. When Hank meets Gayle’s sister, the perennially happy Pearl, he spirits both women off to Washington, D.C., where they become entangled in a rebellion and a sinister government plot to bottle happiness!

“I am thrilled that the TANYS adjudicator recognized the quality of work that the students are doing,” said director Frame. “Taking a chance on an unknown show is always a challenge and the students have made me proud by rising up to meet this challenge.”

Love in the Insecurity Zone features an all-student cast backed by an award-winning production crew. The cast includes: Harlequin veterans Kat Jordan, Josh Stedge, LaRae Brooks, Matthew Limerick, Mandi Bauso, and Ian Moore, ably accompanied by newcomers Becky White and Zachariah Phillips. The artistic staff includes: Rob Andrusko, sets; Brad McLean, lights; Mark Romig, video; Jed Daniels, sound; and Matthew Ryan Limerick, costumes. Long time Harlequin advisor Bob Frame again takes the director’s chair.

Please note mature language is used in the play.
