Are old high school prom dresses still hanging in the back of your closet? Why not donate them to the Cayuga Community College Tutor Club Prom Dress Project! This project promotes sustainability through recycling gently used prom dresses to local high school girls.
The Tutor Club will collect semi-formal, formal, and bridesmaids dresses as well as other gowns now through November 23. Gowns may be dropped off at the Auburn Campus Main Entrance or at the Academic Support Center. Community members may also drop off their donated dresses at the Auburn Public Theater, 8 Exchange Street at Genesee; or the YMCA, 27 William St. in Auburn.
Donated gowns will be sold during the "Gorgeous Gowns Second Time Around" event on the Auburn Campus following next spring: March 2-4 and April 20-22, 2012. All proceeds are donated to charity.
Last year, efforts on both the Auburn and Fulton campuses raised $2,100 that was donated to such organizations as the Salvation Army in Fulton and in Oswego, and Lunches with Love at Holy Family Church in Auburn.
The Prom Dress Project received funding to purchase the hanging racks for the dresses from the Kauffman Foundation-supported Enitiative, a coalition of committed academic and community partners to incorporate entrepreneurship throughout Central New York.
