A capacity crowd of 130 friends, family members, alumni and college personnel gathered to applaud two dozen Cayuga Community College students at the December Recognition Reception on Friday evening, December 11, 2009, at Cayuga's Auburn campus. The student lounge glittered with holiday decorations to mark the festive tradition of honoring students who complete their degree requirements midway through the academic year. The event, hosted by the Alumni Association, featured a welcoming speech by John Camardo, chairman of the college Board of Trustees; remarks by Daniel Larson, president of the college; and a keynote address by John Lamphere, Alumni Association secretary and a member of the Cayuga faculty. Also on hand to congratulate the students were trustees Stanley Kott and Linda Van Buskirk. The annual event originated several years ago, explained emcee Judy Campanella, member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, because students who move on to transfer or job commitments after completing their Cayuga coursework midyear may not be able to attend the Commencement ceremony in May. Recognized individually by name, and given bright new Alumni Association pins to wear, participants gathered after the program to enjoy refreshments with classmates, friends and families.
