CCC "Hardbody Panic" Lecturer to Speak on Body Ideals

DATE: 10-03-2005

From skeletal supermodels to preteens on steroids, our TV screens and magazine covers seem to be waging war on America's body image - and putting our physical and mental health at risk. How can we get a grip?

In a talk titled "Hardbody Panic" at Cayuga Community College, Leslie Heywood will present her insights as a bodybuilder, competitive power lifter, mother, poet, and author. Heywood, a professor of English and creative writing at SUNY Binghamton, will speak on Monday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the college theater in Auburn. The free public event is the college's fall 2005 Noreen and Michael J. Falcone Lecture, presented by the Cayuga County Community College Foundation.

Heywood, whose books include Pretty Good for a Girl, Bodymakers, and Dedication to Hunger, will discuss body ideals in the movie Fight Club, the mass media, and the local gym scene. Also on Monday, October 3, the author will present a free public reading of her poetry in the college's student lounge.
