Honors Study

The Honors Study option is designed for academically motivated students wishing to study the liberal arts and sciences and ultimately preparing to transfer to a four-year college. However, Honors Study can also be adapted to other curricula at Cayuga.

Honors Study is intended to provide an enhanced educational experience to those who wish to expand their experiences in and out of the classroom and stimulate their intellectual curiosity. Honors designated courses meet the liberal arts requirements but offer non-traditional ways of learning and require independent thinking, strong reading and writing skills, and a willingness to try new ways of learning.

Honors Study is not a degree program in itself, but rather an enhanced learning experience in that Honors students are intellectually challenged in a manner consistent with their ability and interests. Honors students graduate with an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science in their chosen program of study, but with the distinction of an “Honors Study” degree.

Honors Study graduates have transferred to Stanford University, Cornell University, Syracuse University, University of Virginia, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Geneseo, and many other major 4-year universities.

Why join Honors Study?

If you join Honors Study you will have the opportunity for enhanced multidisciplinary learning opportunities; increased development of leadership and service qualities; camaraderie with students who share similar aspirations and capabilities, as well as mutual support and learning; and guidance and assistance from a caring and dedicated staff.
You may also be eligible for a full tuition scholarship, sophomore scholarship, and funding reserved specifically for Honors students (awarded on a competitive basis).
When applying to a transfer institution, the challenge of an Honors education will give you the competitive advantage of proven academic capability and demonstrated initiative.

How do I qualify for admission to Honors Study?
Any current or entering student with a GPA of 3.0 or an average of 85% or higher is eligible for admission to Honors Study. Once accepted, you must maintain a 3.0 GPA. If you do not meet the criteria when you enroll in Cayuga, you may join after one semester by earning a 3.0 GPA.

What do Honors students have to do?
Honors students take the same courses as other students, but have the opportunity to take Honors sections of courses. There are also additional opportunities for courses, including Honors Seminars and Independent Honors Study. To earn the distinction of graduating from Honors Study, you must complete five courses designated as Honors courses and one nontraditional course (such as a travel study course, independent study, or internship).

Will Honors classes prolong my stay at CCC?
Many Honors classes satisfy General Education requirements. Such courses include History, Art, English, Biology, Math, and Social Sciences such as Psychology and Sociology. Thus, since most credits obtained in Honors Study can be applied to degree requirements, participation in Honors Study should not affect the time required for graduation.

When should I sign up for Honors Study?
Students who meet the eligibility requirements should sign up as soon as possible, ideally during their first or second semester at Cayuga.
