Geographic Information Systems

Combine your interest in science and technology by studying in this degree program. By learning speciailized computer software that takes images drawn from satellites, GPS waypoints, aerial photography, and any other source of data you will make interactive maps for decisions makers from all types of career areas. GIS is a tool that is being applied in environmental studies, county and real estate planning, marketing, history and even law enforcement.

Cayuga Success Stories

Cayuga's GIS program allowed Holly Westcott '02, to combine her interests in environmental issues and computer technology. An internship with the Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology added practical experience to her classroom learning. "I felt really close to the students and faculty and got a lot of personal attention, which helped me succeed," she says. "Cayuga is a place I highly recommend."

Kristen Cole '02 loves the outdoors, science, and computers. As a GIS student intern at Cayuga, she mapped trails at the Sterling Nature Center and prepared CDs for teachers using GIS in the classroom. After graduation, Kristen went on to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry to complete a bachelor degree.

Sid Cuff '02 started as a math/science major at Cayuga, but switched to Geographic Information Systems after one elective course. He now works full-time on campus as a GIS specialist with the Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology.

• A variety of transfer arrangements have been made with SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry for transfer of the GIS program credits into Natural Resources Management and Environmental Science. Proper advisement will help to ensure ease of transfer and best preparation in the sciences. Graduates have also transferred to Cornell University and a 2 + 2 agreement was signed with SUNY Cortland for transfer into their new GIS program.
